Going into Satomi Jaya in Shiroyama Park, what first catches your eye is the eight dango set. The number eight comes from Nanso Satomi Hakkenden, a well-known fiction story that takes place at Tateyama Castle. The recipe by Yachi-Bachan, or Grandma Yachi, from Yamagata never uses rice powder but instead uses steamed rice to make these dango balls. The highest quality ingredients are used for their toppings as well. Order it before you go for a walk in the park so your dango is ready when you come back (830 yen – tax inc).

At the bakery located near Tateyama station west exit, the husband bakes bread using fresh yeast while his wife makes sweets. One of the best known is Nameraka pudding (220 yen – tax exc). Nameraka means smooth in Japanese, and just as the name describes, the texture is smooth and creamy. It is steamed in carefully controlled temperature using the freshest eggs possible. Can be a good choice as a gift as they last for a few days.

Projecting an image like a rainbow over Tateyama Bay, their seven colored macaroons are baked as sticks and served with two types of locally produced jam, chocolate sauce and cream cheese.
